A funeral ceremony honoring and remembering the life of Christine Vivian "Sally" Pearson Upton will be held 2 p.m., Friday, March 17, 2017 at the Chapel of the Garden, Rice Funeral Service in Claremore, Oklahoma.
Christine Vivian "Sally" Pearson Upton Sept. 24, 1923 - March 9, 2017. She was the daughter of Daff and Reta Pearson of Livonia, Mo.. Sally attended all twelve years of her education in Livonia, Mo. and graduated as Valedictorian of her class in 1941. She was very active in many sports and played all 4 years of basketball as a forward. She also attended Kirksville Teacher College in Kirksville, Missouri.
After graduation, Sally worked at the telephone office in Cincinnati, Iowa, and taught school in the Putnam County School District. She later joined her sister, Maxine, where they both worked in the aircraft defense plant in Rock Island and Moline, Illinois. Sally and her sister joined their friend, Bonnie McKelvey and they were transferred to the McDonald Douglas defense plant in Oklahoma City, Okla. There they were known as "Rosie the Riveters". It was during this time both Sally and her sister met their future husbands.
Sally married James F. Upton Jr. in 1946 and to this union two children, Kim Lynette and Timothy James, were born.
Sally's husband served in the Air Force and this enabled the family to travel extensively. Some of the places they were stationed was CA, WA State, NV, MO, IA and VA. They were also stationed overseas in England, Germany and the Philippine Islands. While there, they traveled to Holland, France, and Switzerland.
Sally's greatest passion was golf and bowling. She started golfing in Nevada and golfed every day when they were stationed in the Philippines.
Some of her proudest moments was when she received the state medal for a bowling score of 277. She won numerous championship flights and trophies in golf. Sally was also known for her excellent putting skills and her "Texas Wedge".
After retirement from service she and her husband resided in Sparks, NV and eventually made their home in Claremore, OK. In Claremore she started playing golf in 1983 and remained active until 2007.
Sally was baptized in 2016 by Rev. Stephen Posey of the Foyil United Methodist Church.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jimmie in 1986, her daughter Kim Martin, son Timothy Upton, grandson Tracy Martin and sisters Dorothy Sparks and Maxine Sanders. She is survived by her grandson Terry Martin, great grandson James Martin, daughter-in-law Denise Upton and sister Patsy (Jim) Beamer, brother-in-law Max Sparks and several nieces and nephews.
