Edward Lee Campbell, a long time resident of Claremore passed away February 22, the day before his birthday, at the age of 66. He had been in a Tulsa hospital for only a short time.
Ed was born in Stilwell on Feb. 23, 1951. This is where he was raised by older parents, Fred and Nellie Campbell who lived all their lives there.
Bill Campbell, Ed's only son was raised by the grandparents due to his working out of town in construction. Bill and Cheryl's son, Derrick was Ed's only grandchild.
His two brothers, also raised in Stillwell, are Winifred Campbell who passed in 2015. Robert and Dorothy Campbell from Lincoln, Ark.
In the seventies, Ed came to Claremore and worked for the late C.H. Smith, of Smith Construction/Verdigris Valley Sod Farm, now owned by Mark Smith.
Ed worked over forty years as a foreman and the Smith's were just like his family. They all loved him.
The Crew who worked with him knew they had to do a good job every day. An honest days work, that was his way. He could outwork any of his crew no matter how young they were. He came in contact with many people who always respected and knew they could count on him. A man of his word, just like John Wayne, whom he admired.
Julia (Judy) Seals was his partner of forty years, also helping raise her four children - Susie, Dawson, Justin, and Wahlea. They all loved him and were very close calling him Poppy Ed. The youngest daughter Wahlea had cancer (Retinoblastoma) as an infant being a survivor of 49 years.
Ed always made sure they had transportation and funds for all the trips to Houston, Texas to obtain her prosthesis and surgeries which were performed in 1988, 1989, and 1990.
He was so good to everyone and never expected anything in return.
If you didn't get a chance to meet him, you missed knowing a great man. I have always loved Edward and there will never be another one like him.
