Services to honor and celebrate the life of Elva Mae Strickland will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2016 at New Hope Church of God. Elva Mae Boyd was born on July 29, 1929 in Stillwater, Okla. to Ray and Lena (Tipton) Boyd.
She had two sisters, Norma Lee and Ruby Pearl, and one brother, Orval. She grew up on a farm in Fairfield, Calif. where she went to school until her eighth grade year.
While in school she enjoyed reading, writing and being a part of the Glee Club.
At the young age of seventeen she met and married Clarence C. Morris and had her first child, Debra Lee Morris.
They lived and farmed in California for eight years until her and Clarence divorced and went their separate ways.
In November of 1954, Elva married Carl B. Strickland and moved to Claremore, Okla. where they made their home for many years and welcomed her son, Carl D. Strickland.
In 1969, she completed her degree as a Certified Nurse Aide and began her work of taking care of many people. She was a house wife, a loving mother, and an active member at First Church of God.
In addition to her love of the Lord and taking care of others in need, she also enjoyed arts and crafts, playing the guitar, harmonica piano: and sometimes all at the same time.
After Carl's retirement from Oklahoma Natural Gas in the mid 1980s, the two moved to Red Oak, Okla., Carl's birthplace, and became faithful members at Salony Free Will Baptist Church. He passed away in March of 1995 and Elva returned to Claremore to be near her family.
She loved her family and friends. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, be a shoulder to cry on, or be a friend to laugh and joke with.
Elva passed away Friday, July 16, 2016 at Hillcrest Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She will live in their hearts forever and be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carl B. Strickland; granddaughters, Julie Mize and Lauretta Coronado; and sisters, Norma Lee Martin and Ruby Pearl Elliot; parents, Ray and Lena Boyd.
Those she leaves behind are her brother, Orval Boyd; son, Carl Strickland and wife, Jeanette; daughter, Debra Lee Richardson, extended son and daughter, Sam and Frankie Stone; grandchildren, Ronnie Stone, Sherry Wilson and husband, Aaron, Tammy Doughty, John Decker, Joel Decker, Allen Decker and wife, Linda; great grandchildren, Cody D.
