Services to honor, remember, and celebrate the life of Emma "Monette" Sams will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016 at the Heatherridge Baptist Church in Tulsa. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery. Rice Funeral Service has been entrusted with Monette's arrangements.
The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Monette passed away suddenly Tuesday evening at her home in Claremore at the age of 60.
Born Nov. 28, 1955 in Tulsa, Monette was the beloved daughter of Luther Cullum and Mary Lurea (Slaughter) Hopkins. Monette was raised in Tulsa and graduated with the Class of 1974 at Tulsa Central High School.
She played clarinet in the marching band and the violin with the school orchestra. Following high school, Monette attended Tulsa Junior College where she earned her degree in Accounting. She married Steven L. Sams on June 19, 1976 at the Heatherridge Baptist Church. They gave birth to their only daughter Christine "Gabby" on June 29, 1997. Steven passed away November 28, 2009.
Monette was always known to be artistic. In addition to her musical talents, Monette loved to sketch and draw pictures of floral arrangements and designs. She also loved to travel and attend baseball games in Chicago and St. Louis.
The Cubs were always Monette's favorite team. She and her husband Steven loved spending their free time in summer hunting, fishing and staying at their cabin on Lake Tenkiller. Monette genuinely loved all children.
She was known to be a second mother to all of the children in the family, spending countless hours volunteering as a baby sitter whenever she was needed.
Employed as a teacher's assistant with Tulsa Public Schools, she loved her tenures at Elliott, Disney and Hoover Elementary. Monette also was employed part time with the Fair Meadows Race Track. She loved to work, and she genuinely loved the relationships she developed with all of her friends, co-workers, and students. Monette was a fun-loving and kind hearted person that will be missed dearly by all.
Survivors include her mother Lurea Hopkins; her daughter Christine "Gabby" Sams; her nieces: Sharon Jackell, Rebecca Harrison, Barbara Beaver, and Linda Gipson; and two nephews: David and Tom Cypert. Her father, husband, and her sister Patricia E. Martin preceded her in death.
