TOPSFIELD - Gerda J. (Johansen) Roeder, 82, wife of Charles B. Roeder, passed away November 27, 2017 at Beverly Hospital with her loving family by her side.
Born in Hammerfest, Norway, she was the daughter of the late Aksel and Bergoljot (Dahle) Johansen. Gerda was raised and educated in Hammerfest and lived there until her teenage years. She moved to England where she studied opera and singing. Gerda traveled the world as an opera singer on passenger cargo ships. Many of her port of calls were in Europe and South America. Growing up on the coast of Norway instilled a love of all things to do with the ocean from the beauty and smells of the water. This love of the ocean led to Gerda making all the traditional Norwegian delicacies, especially herring. She met her husband Charles in Norway, they were married and came to New York on July 4, 1967. Upon their arrival, her husband was shipped out to Vietnam. Upon his return, they lived at Ft. Devens in Massachusetts before moving to Topsfield in 1970 and raised their family there. Gerda loved politics and has a veracious appetite for discussion. With her husband, she enjoyed her Sunday drives to Gloucester and Marblehead and summering at their home on Isle of Springs at Boothbay Harbor in Maine. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor and her love of adventure. Gerda will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by her children, Stein Roeder of Seabrook Beach, N.H., Siv B. Smith of Topsfield; her grandchild, Kierin Smith; two brothers, Knut Johansen and Gunnar Johanson, both of Norway; two sisters, Rigmor Johansen and Rande Johansen, both of Norway; and several nieces and nephews.
