Jerry passed away Friday evening at the Claremore Veterans Center. He was 74.
Born February 17, 1942 in Vinita, Oklahoma to Charles Christopher and Alma Marie (Crockett) Hawkins, Jerry was reared and educated in his birth community. Following graduation from Vinita High School in 1959, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he served his country for nine years. Upon his return from Vietnam, Jerry began a career with the United States Postal Service, in Tulsa, that lasted 36 years.
At the age of 55 Jerry began his retirement journey, soon relocating to Claremore where he could be closer to his family and friends and where he established close knit relationships with his neighbors.
Jerry enjoyed 'tinkering and piddling' as he worked on an occasional car and spent a lot of time in his yard nurturing his fruit trees and meticulously caring for his lawn and landscaping. He also enjoyed traveling some in his younger days, as well as, playing cards and guarding his property from pesky moles and skunks. Mostly, he cherished the time he was able to share with his children, grandchildren, siblings and cousins.
Jerry is survived by: his children: Ron Hawkins of Oklahoma City; Diana Maner of Pryor; Tina Dillon of Goodyear, Ariz., Laura Sellers of Claremore; Christopher Hawkins also of Claremore, Bryan Hawkins of Catoosa and Violet Kirkendall of Oologah; Godsons: Aaron and Ryan Kirkendall; nine grandchildren: Brianna Greene, Renae Robertson, Derrick Maner, Misty Maner, Dakota Dillon, Joshua Sellers, Justina Hawkins, Athena Hawkins and Bryson Hawkins. He is also survived by several great grandchildren and sisters: Samantha Clark of Carthage, TX and Lavanna Morgan of Olean, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by: his parents and siblings: Sharon Rice, Charlie and Fred Hawkins.
