Services to honor the life of Jewell Faye Baker will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at The First Baptist Church in Claremore, Okla. She will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2018, at Rice Funeral Home in Claremore.
Faye was born on July 1, 1942 and passed away Thursday, January 18, 2018.
Faye was the second daughter born to Herschel Washington and Jewell Nickerson-Washington. She attended Claremore schools and was a lifelong resident of Claremore. Faye was a cosmetologist for many years, starting her career at Auldon's Beauty Shop and went on to open her first salon: Hair Fashions by Faye, and later: Hairport.
On April 15, 1974 she married John A. Baker and was happily married for 38 years. Together they shared a love for horse racing and working on their place in Claremore. Faye woke up every day with a dust cloth & broom in her hand, and enjoyed keeping her home clean.
Surviving family members include children: Brenda Lagers, Brett Battenfield, and John G. Baker, all of Claremore; five siblings: Wayne Washington, his wife, Estelene, Geraldine Williams, her husband Fred, Fred Washington, Judy Edwards, her husband Robert, and Sister-in-law Nancy Washington; granddaughters: Lynse Lagers, Brooke Dudley, and her husband Matthew, and Delayna Trease, her husband Adam, and Jake Baker; great-grandchildren: Brynli Dudley and Grant Trease; many nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: John A. Baker, one brother: Bradley Washington; her son-in-law: Michael Lagers; and granddaughter: Brandi Battenfield.
