Service honoring, remembering, and celebrating the life of Jo Anna Carter will be held 12 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2018 at the Hilldale Baptist Church in Keetonville. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Rice Funeral Service.
Jo Anna passed away unexpectedly Monday, April 10, 2018 in Owasso. She was 65 years of age.
Born Sept. 30, 1952 in Muskogee, Jo Anna was the daughter of Chester and Mary (Rolland) Michener. The family moved to Tulsa and eventually Catoosa where Jo Anna graduated with the Class of 1970. A four year all-state basketball player, Jo Anna received the most athletic girl award all 4 years of high school.
Following high school, Jo Anna attended NEO College in Miami. She met Ted Carter at the Catoosa Tasty Freeze drive-in and the couple married August 25, 1972 at the Hilldale Baptist Church.
Jo Anna worked various jobs including a position at Zebco, making the world's greatest milkshakes at Lil' Abners in Catoosa, and assisting her husband with his machine shop.
She went to work for Catoosa Public schools in the early 1970's driving a school bus, working in the kitchen, and was eventually promoted to manager of all the cafeterias in the school system. Jo Anna recently retired and devoted her life to becoming the most fun "Manaw" to her grandchildren.
Jo Anna had an infectious personality and she was the easiest person to talk to. People always "opened up" to her and she always had a hard time saying goodbye. Jo Anna had a distinct laugh and her voice carried throughout the lunchroom.
When the lunch room was quiet, you knew that she was not there. As her vocation would indicate, she was a terrific cook, always preparing a feast for her family and friends to enjoy.
She also regularly prepared the meals for most functions at Hilldale Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member since the early 1960's. Jo Anna will be dearly missed by numerous friends and family who loved her.
Surviving family members include her husband, Ted; her children: Stephanie Wiseman and her partner, Amy Stone, Candace Stinson and her husband, Justin, and Chester Carter and his wife, Kristin; her grandchildren: Aaron and Evan Wiseman, and Shayla and Olivia Stinson; her brother Gary Michener and his wife Donna; and her first great-grandchild on the way to be born in late July.
Jo Anna was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Tony Michener, her sisters, Donna Steffens and Linda Parrish; and her father-in-law, Walt Carter, who lived with them during the last few years of his life.
