John's Story

John Mitchell Bagby was born on March 12, 1934 in Moberly, Missouri to Sterling and Beatrice Bagby, and passed from this life on Saturday, August 12, 2017. He attended Huntsville, Mo. High School where he enjoyed being a part of the basketball team. During his high school years, he met his future wife, Irene. John graduated from Huntsville High School in 1952.
After graduation, John married Della 'Irene' Gowin, and they made their home in Huntsville, Missouri. Later they bought John's parent's home place and made their home there, where they raised their four children: Don Mitchell, Rebecca "Becky" Sue, Ross Alan, and Jon Dale. The family made a move to Claremore, Oklahoma for John's employment with Peabody Coal in 1972. In 1975, John was transferred to the home office of Peabody in St. Louis, Mo. The family followed and lived in Mascoutah, Ill. just outside St. Louis. In 1988, Claremore became home again with John's retirement. Irene and John became snow birds, spending time in Arizona during the cold months in Oklahoma.
John has 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. When not working, he enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, family reunions, horse racing, and spending time in Arizona. John enjoyed staying busy and liked to always have home projects going. John was an active member at First Christian Church, Huntsville and sang in the church choir. He was an active part of the Shriners, Lions Club, and Port of Catoosa Authority. He liked big band music and country music especially Western Swing. John was known for his sense of humor. He liked to joke and tease with his family and friends.
John first joined Peabody in 1967 as a Land Agent for Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas and was promoted to the director of the Land Department in 1978. He then was appointed to be the Director of Land for Peabody Development when it was formed in 1983. Eventually, he attained the position of Vice-President of Land Department for Peabody Development Company. Peabody is the largest coal producer in the United States.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Sterling Howard Bagby and Beatrice Malone Bagby and Della "Irene" Bagby, his beloved wife of 60 years. Also, his brothers, Jesse Edward and Sterling Bagby "Jr.".
Those family members who survive include his siblings, Mildred Bagby Edwards of Moberly, MO, GAnna Bagby Walker of Warrensburg. Mo., and Tyson Bagby and wife Marie Bagby of Huntsville, MO. Also his children, Don Bagby of Claremore, Okla., Rebecca "Becky" Reasnor and husband, John Reasnor of Yukon, Okla., Ross Bagby and wife Laura of Claremore, OK, and Jon Bagby and wife Kim of The Woodlands, Texas.
John was particularly proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by Joshua Paul Reasnor, wife Kristen Nikole Daugherty Reasnor, and daughter Aliyajae "Ali" Nikole Daugherty of Piedmont, Okla., Elizabeth Jean Reasnor Brack, husband Josh David Brack, and children Bethany Mae, Issac David, Myra Elizabeth, and Josiah Lee Brack of Edmond, Okla., John Andrew Reasnor of Norman, OK, Sarah Rebekah Reasnor Edsall, husband Justin Tyler Edsall and daughter, Harper Belle Edsall of Loyal, Okla. Also Danielle Irene Bagby and daughter Addison Irene West of Nashville, Tenn., Kaitlyn Nicole and Alec Braiden Bagby of The Woodlands, Texas.
John is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
