John Smith, 87, Pendleton, passed away Aug. 15, 2016, at his home. He was born June 12, 1928, in Markleville, to the late Leo R. and Agnes Cora (Markle) Smith. John retired from Guide Lamp Division of General Motors in Anderson in 1986 following 24 years of service.
He was a member of Markleville North Christian Church, United Auto Workers Local 663, and a member of both Markleville Masonic Lodge 629 F&AM; and Anderson Chapter 52 Royal Arch Masons for more than 50 years. John was a 1946 graduate of Markleville High School and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.
He was "preceded" in 'death' by 'his" parents; and brothers, Vernis "Bud" Smith and Marvin Smith. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo (Philber) Smith, whom he married Dec. 21, 1951; children, Warren (wife, Debbie) Smith of Martinsville, Michael Joe (wife, Yvette) Smith of Pendleton, Kevin (wife, Sherri) Smith of Pendleton, and JoDene (husband, John) Wingate of Pendleton; siblings, Merrill (wife, Sharon) Smith, David (wife, Sheralyn) Smith and Virginia Bronnenberg, all of Markleville; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Acme Funeral Home, with service's beginning at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jerome Bell officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Acme Memorial Park Cemetery.
