Funeral services honoring and remembering Michael Smith will be held 2:00p.m., Thursday, May 30, 2019, at the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service in Claremore. The family will receive friends from 6-8p.m, on Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Michael Smith, 66-year-old resident of Claremore, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2019, at his home with his wife and family by his side.
Michael was born May 31, 1952, in Altus, Oklahoma. As a young man, his family moved to Rogers County, where his father worked in the heat and air trade starting Killian Services. Michael attended Inola, Justice, and Sequoyah schools, dropping out in High School to enlist in the Marine Corps, serving proudly during the Vietnam War. During his service, he was wounded in action and received a purple heart. After his time in Vietnam, he continued to serve in the Oklahoma National Guard, and the Air National Guard.
Michael made his home in Claremore, working maintenance for Heston, and Erlanger Tubular Corp, and Valmont Coating, he also was a truck driver for Meltons for a time.
Michael was a proud member of the American Veterans Motorcycle Club.
Michael was an avid diver, and diving instructor, diving often at Lake Tenkiller and Ft. Gibson Lake, and had the opportunity to explore a few coral reefs.
Michael was a character, and never met a stranger, he made an impression on everyone he met, and he will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
Michael is survived by his wife: Shirley (Pranger) Smith of Claremore; his children: Jody Smith, Jeremy Smith, Jessica McQueen, Joshua Smith and his wife, Anne, and Corey Hopkins, and his wife, Janet, all of Claremore; grandchildren: Blake Smith, Sierra Smith, Savanna Smith, Kayla Nichols, JJ McQueen, Jaiden Smith, and Lyle Smith; one great-grandson: Xander Nichols; siblings: Brenda Mitchell, Rockie Smith, and Richard Sterling Killian; his mother: Joann Killian; his motorcycle family: the brothers of the AVMC; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Michael is preceded in death by his Father: Richard Killian; brother: Pat Killian; and his biological father Bill Smith.
