Nellie's Story

Services to honor the life of Nellie M. Pearson will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at St. Peter's Baptist Church in Tulsa, Okla. She will be laid to rest at the Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Rice Funeral Home in Claremore. Nellie passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018, in Claremore. She was 88.
Nellie was born June 7, 1929 in Council Hill, Oklahoma, the daughter of Ambrozia and Vianna (Crear) Herndon. She attended Carver Jr. High School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1948. While in school she excelled at volleyball and basketball. Nellie married Matres L. Pearson on July 23, 1953. After becoming a single parent at a young age she moved to a quieter community: Claremore to raise her five children. She and her family where members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Claremore. Her children remember her as a kind, loving, disciplinarian who raised them in the church and encouraged them that they could achieve whatever they desired if they put the Lord first. After moving to Claremore, Nellie worked at Wal-Mart for over 22 years, excelling in many positions and rising to her final position of department manager and receiving manager before retiring in 1990.
Nellie was a skilled pianist and was the minister of music at St. Peter Baptist Church in Tulsa for over fifteen years. She was a dedicated member, the mother of the church whose legacy is faithfulness and commitment to the service of the Lord. She often volunteered with the community choir and other activities in the music ministry.
Surviving family members include, her three children: Patsey A. Thompson and husband Powell, of Ft. Worth, Texas, Deloyce J. Young of Tulsa, Okla., Patrie L. Jones of Tulsa, Okla., Charles E. Pearson of Claremore, OK; 10 grandchildren: Sterling, DeShawn, Darrin, Lorraine, Dana, Dena, Danelle, Denise, Sidney, Madison; 17 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; her seven siblings; one son: Donald Ray Pearson; and one grandson: Jerry Pearson and two nieces.
