Phyllis's Story

Phyllis Ann Estes was born on Oct. 21, 1960, in Ellenwood, Kan., to Philip Otis and Ruth Maurine (Wycoff) Leonard. She passed from this life on Sunday, Nov. 20, at her home, doing what Phyllis was known to do best, putting others before herself. Phyllis was 56 years and 30 days old.

Phyllis graduated with the Pryor High School class of 1978. She had earned a teaching certificate, as well as a bachelors in manufacturing from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. For over 19 years, Phyllis severed in numerous capacities for the Locust Grove School District including being a school bus driver. She had recently joined the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market team in Locust Grove, where she served as cashier and most importantly, greeted everyone that walked through the store doors or bought gas there.

On Christmas Eve in 1979, Phyllis met James Lesley Estes, and James proposed the next day for her hand in marriage. Eight months later, on Aug. 1, 1980, in Locust Grove, Phyllis and James were united in marriage. They had lived in Locust Grove for the past 33 years, having lived in Pryor for some time.

Phyllis had been baptized as a young girl. She was a member of the Eastern Star and had helped in many capacities for the local Masonic Lodge. Phyllis loved cars and racing and had also worked as a pit crew member. She loved to attend and cheer for all the different Pirate sporting events, especially those that her kids and grandkids participated in. Phyllis loved being her grandkid's "team Nana". She was a scheduler for the Northeastern Oklahoma Officials Association, and was also a game scheduler for the Locust Grove and Salina games for years. Phyllis had held the title of "The Madam" by the officials. She was very much a people person. Phyllis loved her animals and fur babies. She enjoyed anything that involved James or her family and loved them all dearly. She will be truly missed by the entire Pirate Nation Family and anyone that knew and loved her.

Phyllis is survived by: her loving husband: James of Locust Grove; 1 daughter: Jamie Carney and husband Jesse of Locust Grove; 1 son: Bubba Estes of Locust Grove; 5 grandchildren: Madison Smith, Trey Smith, Taylor Carney, Chris Carney and wife Quin, and Jeremy Carney; 1 great-granddaughter: Thea Carney; Her other Mother: Mary Lou Estes; 2 brothers-in-law: Wesley Dale Estes of Locust Grove, and Don Estes and wife Diana of Cassville, MO; 1 aunt: Jackie Wyckoff; cousins: Robin McDoniel and husband Eddie of Springtown, Texas, Brandy Wyckoff of Garber, Okla., and Lanna Quin of Artesia, NM; Numerous close friends and an entire community of friends and Pirate family.

The family will receive friends at the Locust Grove Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 25, from 6P.M-8P.M. A Pirate Celebration of Life will be held 1P.M., Saturday, Nov. 26, 2 at the Pirate Arena in Locust Grove. The family request that all those attending, please wear their Pirate gear in honor of Phyllis. Brother Shawn Bates and Rev. Jeff Blair will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hogan Cemetery in Locust Grove. Funeral services have been entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
