Robert Smith, 84, of Spavinaw, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2017 at his home. He was born on April 2, 1932 in Locust Grove, Oklahoma; the son of Sam and Emma (Doublehead) Smith. He worked most of his life for Cherokee Nation Parks Department; working in the Kenwood area. He married Wilma Smith on February 22, 1952 in Salina, Oklahoma. Robert enjoyed playing horseshoes, watching little league baseball, college football and western movies. He also loved the outdoors, cutting wood, fishing and spending time with those he loved. Robert enjoyed listening to Bluegrass music and looked forward to attending the Red Bird Smith Stomp Ground, and being involved in the traditional Keetoowah dance, carried on from the trail of tears to Oklahoma. He has lived in the area for 64 years, coming from Locust Grove. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 6, 2017 in the Shipman' s Funeral Home Chapel with Crossland Smith and Justin Turner officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2017 in the Shipman' s Funeral Home Chapel. He is survived his wife, Wilma Smith of the home; sons, Mart Smith and wife Sarah of Bluejacket, Oklahoma and Garry Smith of Spavinaw, Oklahoma; daughter, Jannavee Smith of Eucha, Oklahoma; sister, Mabel Chunestudy and husband Robert of Vian, Oklahoma; 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Emma Smith; brothers, Joseph and John Smith; and sister, Polly Allen.
