Services honoring and remembering the life of Ronald Michael "Ron" Smith will be 2 p.m., Monday at Rice Funeral Service. Visitation will be Sunday 2-4 p.m. Ron passed away Friday evening, Dec. 30, 2016 unexpectedly at his home in Chelsea. He was 51.
Born into an Air Force family on Dec. 24, 1965 in Columbus, Miss., Ron was the son of John J. and DelVerta (Catt) Smith. He lived in numerous places throughout his childhood including Florida, Louisiana, Kansas, Guam, Korea, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Colorado.
Ron graduated from Harrison High School with the Class of 1984 in Colorado Springs.
He was known to be quite the explorer and outdoorsman during his early years. While living in Louisiana, Ron once came home to his mother with baby alligators hanging from his ears after visiting an alligator pit.
He also once brought her a Copperhead snake in a jar. Ron maintained his jovial wit and high energetic spirit throughout the rest of his lifetime.
The Smith family came to Rogers County when their father's health began to decline. DelVerta's family had deep roots in the area. Known to walk almost everywhere he traveled, Ron met his wife Tanya Hulvy while hitchhiking on Highway 66. She and two other girls gave him a ride. Ron began working for the Claremore Progress delivering newspapers where he was employed almost ten years along with his brother, Johnny.
When Tanya preceded him in death, Ron chose to stay at home to care for their children. Nobody in the world had a bigger heart than Ron. He loved his family dearly and will be remembered in our hearts forever.
Ron loved football and he was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings became his favorite team during Super Bowl IX, when they faced his brother's team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ron was also known to be quite the movie buff. Martial arts movies were his all-time favorite. Ron could answer almost any cinema related trivia question that would come his way.
Surviving family members include his children: Ronald James Smith and Leanna DelRose Smith of Chelsea; his mother DelVerta Smith of Chelsea; his siblings: Johnny Smith and wife Louann of Claremore; and Teletha Penny and husband Thomas of Empire, Michigan. Ron was preceded in death by his wife Tanya Smith; his daughter Tana Ann Smith; and his father John Smith.
