A graveside service to honor and remember the life of Ruth Marie Gourd Lewis will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017 in Woodlawn Cemetery. Ruth passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 in Meeker, Okla. She was 91.
Arrangements are under the care of Rice Funeral Service.
Born Sept. 10, 1925 in Tulsa, Okla. to T.E. and Marie (Colston) Dowell, Ruth was reared and educated in the Claremore community. In addition to being raised by her mother, Marie, Ruth was also raised by Joe Heape who would become her beloved father.
Early on Ruth worked at the Wigwam in Claremore, she later began a career with Walmart that spanned 21 years, retiring as a District Jewelry Supervisor.
Ruth was united in marriage to Clarence Gourd and the two spent many wonderful years together. They were both founding members of Faith Baptist Church where Ruth taught Sunday school and where each were members until their passing.
One who always took care of others, Ruth spent her retirement years caring for her husband, Clarence, as well as, her parents Marie and Joe.
Ruth had three favorites. They were God, family and food - in that order.
Later in life she added a fourth favorite to the mix taking advantage of any opportunity she could find to browse through thrift store treasures.
This beloved mother and grandmother will certainly be missed by those family members who survive. They are: her daughter, Patty Abshire of Chandler; her son, Danny Lockhart of Kentucky; four grandchildren: Danette Taylor and husband, Ricky; Mark Bivins, Danyell Humphrey and husband, Doug and Deidra Lockhart; five great-grandchildren: R.D. Taylor and wife, Misty, Michael Humphrey, Skylar Humphrey, Daniel Lockhart and Grace Lockhart; two great-great-grandchildren: Bryson and Brianna Taylor.
She was preceded in death by: her father, T.E. Dowell; her parents: Marie and Joe Heape; the father of her children, Kenneth Lockhart and her husband of 45 years, Clarence Gourd.
