Shawn's Story

Shawn Lee McCurry was born May 18, 1976 in Pryor, to Doug and Connie (Moore) McCurry. He died on Tuesday, Feb. 16, in Tulsa, at the age of 39 years, 8 months, and 26 days. He grew up in the Murphy area and graduated Locust Grove High School as a part of the class of 1994. He played college baseball at Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College in Moore, Oklahoma. He had also attended NEO College in Miami, Oklahoma. On July 31, 1999, Josie Lynn Haggard and Shawn Lee McCurry were united in marriage. To this union were born 3 beautiful children, Dawson, Lynlee, and Kelbi. The family are members of Jubilee Ministries in Locust Grove. He lived the past two years in Salina, but he was a Locust Grove Pirate through and through. He worked as rural mail carrier for some time. Shawn loved to compete, on any level. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, pitching horse shoes, going to the creek, and just simply talking. He liked to go bowling and took pleasure in a game of cards, be it pitch or even poker. Shawn could be found in many activities that involved people. He had a knack for grilling and cooking. His family believed he could out cook his wife Josie. He loved being involved with his church and treasured all the time he spent with his family and friends. He enjoyed all sports, especially slow-pitch softball, and will be remembered for his dedication to helping with all sports. He umpired for many years. He was very active with little league football, baseball, and softball. Shawn also volunteered many times over the years as a table worker for Locust Grove Youth Wrestling's annual wrestling tournament. No matter the activity, if he had friends that needed help running operations, he was one of the first people to volunteer. No questions. He took pride in being able to mentor through coaching and umpiring. Shawn is survived by: his wife Josie, of the home; three children: Dawson Phillip McCurry, Lynlee Cate McCurry, and Kelbi Faith McCurry; his parents: Doug and Connie McCurry of Murphy, Oklahoma; one sister: Shannon Sheppard and husband Ray of Locust Grove; four nieces and nephews: Tyler Sheppard, McKensie Sheppard, Luke Haggard, and Wade Haggard; his mother-in-law: Kelly Henson and husband David of Langley, Oklahoma; his father-in-law: Marion Haggard of Spavinaw; one brother-in-law: Jerry Haggard and wife Cindy of Spavinaw; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends and church family. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20, at Jubilee Ministries in Locust Grove. Pastor John Blackwell, Rev. Danny Tugmon, and Brother Jesse Stark will officiate. Interment will follow at the Haner-Adair Cemetery near Locust Grove. Services have been entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
