Shirley's Story

Text size

A graveside service celebrating the life of Shirley J. Underwood-Hagar will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Claremore under the direction of DeLozier Funeral Service, Chelsea.
Shirley passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016.  She was 77.
Shirley was born on December 30, 1938 and was one of two children gifted to Sydney and Sarah Louise (Messer) Baker. Raised and educated in Claremore, Shirley graduated from Claremore High School and went on to attend Fred Waring School of Music in New York. Later in her life she furthered her education by becoming a CNA.
However Shirley's role as a wife and mother is what truly brought her the most pleasure.
She was her children's biggest supporter and fan in all of their activities.  When they were younger and all four showing livestock in the Rogers County 4H Club or the Rogers County Young Stockmans; Shirley would spend countless hours making sure that everything was done right.
She also liked to take care of the family home and many got to hear her beautiful soprano voice; singing along with her favorite songs as she cleaned and dusted.
Shirley knew her way around the kitchen as well. Her children said she was an excellent cook and many of their neighbors, friends, school staff, and extended family would be the first to agree.
When free time presented itself, Shirley had a number of other hobbies and interests.  According to family she was an accomplished artist, and loved to read and sew.  She was a member of the Claremore Garden Club and the Rogers County Extension Homemakers.
This wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend will be missed by all whose lives she touched.  Shirley is survived by her daughters, Sydney Bohannan and Shaye Guilfoyle of Claremore; sons, John Page and Byron Underwood of Claremore; grandchildren, Stacey Capps, Katlyn Underwood, Macaley Hall, Austin and Sierra Underwood, great grandchildren, Wacey and Josey Capps, Kaden Edwards, and Lillian Underwood, sister, Sandra Swan and husband Richard of Claremore.  She was preceded in death by her husband and father of her children, Bob, her second husband, James Hagar, and her parents, Sydney and Sarah Louise Baker.
