Funeral services for Steve Downing Jr., 91, of Locust Grove will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Locust Grove, Oklahoma with burial to follow at the Downing Family Cemetery. Pastor Jess Dinsmore will officiate. Services are entrusted to Stephens-Key Funeral and Cremation Care.
Steve Downing Jr. was born May 7, 1925 in Wagoner, Oklahoma to Steve and Lula Maud (Mosley) Downing. He went home to be with his Lord on December 9, 2016 at his home in Locust Grove at the age of 91 years, 7 months, and 2 days.
Steve grew up and attended school in Locust Grove. In July of 1943 he joined the United States Navy and served until 1946. He was a radar operator on the USS Santé Fe. Upon returning home from the Navy he went back to high school and graduated in 1946 and there he met Juanita Ross. On February 24, 1947 they were married and four children came from their union. He went to work as an aircraft worker for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in both Oklahoma and California for several years until retirement.
He attended Cedar Crest Baptist Church and on May 27, 1962 he was ordained as a deacon for the church and was a member of Gideon's International. He was a member of the Cherokee Nation and was a recipient of the Cherokee Warrior Award for his time in the military. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3573 in Locust Grove.
Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching sports and coaching baseball. He also enjoyed reading his bible. He loved spending time with his family and friends, visiting and telling stories. His family was the most important thing to him and he loved them dearly. Steve was a wonderful father, grandfather, and friend and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by three daughters, Jackie Chuculate of Vinita, Gloria Cowan and husband David of Kansas and Nita Wilson and husband Don of Locust Grove; one son, Timothy Downing and companion of Locust Grove; eight grandchildren, Barbara Collins and husband Marc of Wagoner, Mark Cowan of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Candle Melton and husband Bryan of Vinita, Brent Cowan of Tahlequah, Jeffry Wilson and wife Natalie of Owasso, Geremy Chuculate and wife Kim of Grove, Jennifer Downing of Claremore and Robert Downing and wife Mary of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; fifteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren and one sister Pauline Wheeler of Tulsa.
He is preceded in death by his wife Juanita, three infant siblings and his younger brother, Joe.
