Thelma's Story

A funeral ceremony honoring and remembering the life of Thelma Ann Sullivan was 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa. Rice Funeral Service was entrusted with the arrangements. The family received visitors from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Thelma passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 19, 2017 at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa. She was 94.
Born April 2, 1923 in Tulsa, Thelma was the daughter of David and Gertrude (Carpenter) Jones. She grew up in Tulsa and was a member of the first class of Will Rogers High School and graduated in 1942. Thelma met James Sullivan on Independence Day in 1946 while attending a picnic at Mohawk Park. The couple fell in love after a tandem ride on a bicycle and married August 31, 1946 after James' return from World War II. During the War, Thelma worked as a welder for McDonnell Douglas building aircraft. Her tiny hands enabled her to get to the really small crevices ensuring that each job was thoroughly completed.
Thelma was employed by various department stores throughout the years in the accounts payable departments. Most of her tenure was devoted to Brown-Duncan - which eventually became Dillard's, where she successfully retired. Upon retirement, Thelma pursued her true passion of caring for children in her home.
Always known to be "the boss," Thelma even left instructions to surviving family regarding the attire to be worn at her funeral. She would always keep the children in line however, her love for family was truly unwavering. Thelma was a terrific cook always welcoming everyone to the table. She loved to can vegetables from her gardens, which she regularly shared with everyone. Thelma's caring nature will not soon be forgotten.
Surviving family members include her daughter Judy Bohanon; her sister Mary Brown and husband Bob; her grandchildren: James Bohanon and wife Julie, and Josh Bohanon and fiancé Brenda Turquette; her great-grandchildren: Wyatt James Bohanon and Lain Henry Bohanon; and the family would like to extend the most sincere acknowledgement to her special friend Caroline Dennis.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son-in-law Josh Bohanon; and her siblings: Archie Jones, Evelyn Helt, Pauline House, and Patricia Koiner.
