Claudia passed away Friday evening, Jan. 27, 2017 in Tulsa. She was 60.
Born Dec. 6, 1956 in Lawton, the daughter of Raymond and Marcella (Poolaw) Tah. A full blood Kiowa Native American, Claudia was very proud of her family's heritage. The family moved to Claremore in 1961 when Raymond accepted a maintenance management position at the Claremore Indian Hospital. Claudia grew up in Claremore and graduated with the high school Class of 1974. She met Robert W. Hemphill and married him on July 10, 1980. Claudia was very athletic during her youth, actively participating in the local fast-pitch softball league and the high school basketball team.
Following high school, Claudia attended the Claremore Vo-Tech where she received her Licensed Practical Nurse certification. She worked for the Claremore Indian Hospital for twenty-six years.
Claudia loved to travel with her colleagues — Debbie, Sue, Nancy and Donna. They visited numerous exciting destinations such as Nova Scotia, Washington D.C., and the Grand Canyon. She was always very competitive in nature and remained actively involved with her children and grandchildren's sporting events throughout her lifetime. An avid sports fan in general, Claudia loved the Sooners and the Raiders. She also loved going to yard sales while most always stopping at Church's Chicken on her way home. Claudia was also a terrific cook, especially cake baking for most any family occasion. Some described her to be a bit bossy, but mostly just really great at keeping things in order. She will be sincerely missed by many family and friends whom loved her dearly.
Surviving family members include her husband Robert W. Hemphill; her four children: Heather Ball and husband Jim, Steve "J.R." Lockler, Robert Hemphill and girlfriend Shannon James, and Ray Hemphill; grandchildren: Joshua, Lori, Marty, Jaci, Sadie, and Nate; three sisters: Majel Steele, Amanda McCombs, Hedy Jenkins and husband Daryl; three brothers: Duke Tah, Dudney Tah, and Douglas Tah.
Claudia was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Peggy Lorraine Downing; mother-in-law Betty Shelton; sister-in-law Peggy Wilson; and her brother-in-law Gary Hemphill.
