A time of visitation to honor and remember the life of Dempsey Carl "Sonny" Chronister will be 4-7 p.m., Monday, September 18, 2017 in the chapel at DeLozier Funeral Service, Chelsea. Sonny passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 in Tulsa, Okla. He was 75.
Born Oct. 25, 1941 on the family homestead in Tiawah, Okla., Sonny's family purchased it for fifty cents an acre. He was one of two children gifted to Marvin D. and Iva (McClure) Chronister. Sonny was raised and educated in his birth community and attended Tiawah and Inola public schools. In 1989 he married the love of his life, Dixie Bailey, and they became a blended family with two children. Sonny provided for his family as a diesel mechanic, working for several different companies throughout his life. It was a career he knew was right for him at a young age when he overhauled his first car at fifteen. He would sometimes boast a little to his family that he got to work on Roy Clark's and Leon McAuliffe's tour buses; something he was quite proud of.
Referred to by his family as a country boy at heart and an outdoorsman, Sonny's free time was spent working on the family homestead or camping. He and Dixie together spent many an hour at Lake Hudson fishing and camping. Sonny was an avid hunter, but his family said he enjoyed the role as camp cook the best. He had a great sense of humor and was always game to play a practical joke on someone. Some would say he just liked to pick on you, but for Sonny it was his way of showing he cared.
This husband, father, brother, and friends will be missed by all whose life he touched. Sonny is survived by his wife of 27 years, Dixie, children, Larry Bailey, Carl Bailey and wife Lee Sue, grandchildren Brandon Bailey, sister, Judy Honeycutt and husband Rolland and numerous nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents.
