Memorial service for James Cochran will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Claremore. Dr. Ray Crawford and Pastor Randy Hamill will officiate. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the MMS-Payne Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
James E. (Jim) Cochran lost his battle with lung cancer on Sept. 24, 2016.
Jim was born on Jan. 28, 1942 to J.A. and Eleanor O'Neill Cochran. Jim received his elementary and secondary education from Windom Rural Schools. He was especially proud to have played in the first eight-man football game in Kansas. Jim attended Emporia State Teacher's College.
His first teaching and coaching position was at Norton Junior High School. In 1969, he moved to Colby Community College. He later served as Dean of Students, Dean of Community Services and Vice-President for Development at Claremore Junior College.
Jim returned to Northwest Kansas where he was in the swine equipment business. In 1985, Jim moved back to Claremore where he was employed by Robson Properties as their leasing manager. Jim served on the city council and was mayor of Claremore for 5 years. Jim moved to Ponca City where he was employed by Bowker Properties where he served as a leasing manager.
He retired on Jan. 1, 2014 and at that time he and his wife, Lil, moved to Grove, Okla.
He is survived by his Wife, Lil, of the home; Sister, Jan King of Kansas City; Niece, Tricia King of Kansas City; Nephew, Andrew King and Andy Johnson of Tempe, Arizona; Sons, Shanen Hohenstein and Jo Lynn of Claremore, their Granddaughter ,Maci; Tracy and Lisa Hohenstein of Atlanta, Georgia; Granddaughters, Caitlin and Carly.
Jim is a member of the Grove United Methodist Church. Memorials may be given to Rogers State University in memory of James Cochran to the RSU Foundation at 1701 W. Will Rogers Blvd. Claremore, Oklahoma 74017
