Memorial services for Leonard Barnes, 90, of Pryor will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 10AM at the First Church of God in Pryor. Pastors Andrew Rehbein and Lynn Higgins will officiate. Services are entrusted to Stephens-Key Funeral and Cremation Care.
Lawrence "Leonard" Barnes was born on January 6, 1927 to Louis E. Jr and Ira "Ette" (Ezzell) Barnes in Locust Grove, Oklahoma. He departed this life on February 2, 2017 in Claremore, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years and 27 days.
Leonard attended school at Little Rock School east of Locust Grove. He attended high school in Locust Grove until the eleventh grade before volunteering for the United States Army during World War II. He received his GED from Northeastern State College. Returning home from the service he married Doris D. Milner on June 24, 1945. They were married over 71 years before she preceded him in death in October of 2016. Leonard worked for years for the Pryor Police Department as the Assistant Chief of Police under Jesse Baugess, then as the Chief of Police for 12 years. He later went to work for the Oklahoma Cement Company as Chief of Security and Shift Supervisor for the planning and maintenance department and worked there for 18 years.
He was a member of the First Church of God in Pryor since 1949, during which time he was head usher for several of those years. He was also on the Pryor City Council for several years prior to his wife's passing.
He is survived by his son Lewis E. Barnes and wife Judy of Claremore; his daughter Linda Richards and husband Jack of Pryor; one brother John C. Barnes and wife Kathrene of Pryor; one sister Jewell "Sue" Sloan and husband Ernest of Santa Maria, California; five grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris; one sister Delilah "Anne" Masterson and three brothers Lawrence T. "Barney" Barnes, Louis Elmo Barnes and William E. Barnes.
