Funeral service for Mary Mae (Hemphill) Stout will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016 at the Inola Funeral Home & Crematory Chapel. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
Ms. Mary (as everyone called her) went home to be with the Lord surrounded by family on July 17, 2016 at the age of 91.
The daughter of Bert and Lillie Stout Hemphill, Mary was born May 1, 1925 in Chelsea, Oklahoma. As a young girl she was raised near Nowata. There she attended school from elementary until high school. As she became old enough to work, Mary took a job as a waitress in Coffeyville. She was a dedicated employee who rode the street from Nowata to work her shift at the cafe. From this job she kept her tips and earned enough money to by her first guitar.
A short time later, Mary met Harold Stout at a church service in Nowata. The couple married on August 3, 1946 in Coffeyville, Kansas. After their marriage the newly wed couple moved to Tulsa. Harold worked at McDonell Douglas before being hired by Murphy Safety Switch. After retiring from Murphys he stayed busy in the garden and studying The Word. Mary was quick to work by his side. In fact, the day before she gave birth to her oldest daughter she was hauling water up Keetonville hill to their home. Mary and Harold moved to Inola in 1965 where they lived until their passing.
Mary was a woman of strong faith, and determination who led by example. Her determination was shown at the age of 45, when she returned to school to earn her GED. Her faith showed her the way to raise her children in church. It also led her to the woman's prison ministry in Taft where she helped bring many women to the Lord.
In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, playing the piano and guitar, and studying the Bible. However spending time with her family was always her top priority.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold; parents Bert and Lillie Hemphill; sister, Edna Juanita Monday, and brothers, Leslie E., Herbert H., Jesse Elmer, and Milford Hemphill.
Survivors include her daughters, Trecia Bickford and husband Joe; Joyce Meeker and husband David; four grandchildren, Kathryn Bolen and husband David, Dawn Buckner and husband Tommy, Kimberly Bickford and husband Steve, and David Meeker; seven great-grandchildren, Anna, Autumn, Dillon, David III, Tanner, Landon, and Kyleigh and siblings, Henry Hemphill, Daisy Smith, and Jewel Bailey.
