Rose passed away Monday, April 4, 2016 at her home. She was 89.
Rose Anna Nelson was born Feb. 12, 1927 in Flagler, Colo. to Bruce and Lila (Johnson) Nelson. She spent the first years of her life in Colorado before the Nelson family made a move to Easton, Kan. It was there she spent the rest of her adolescent and teen years until meeting a United States Army serviceman stationed in nearby Leavenworth.
On Dec. 19, 1946 Rose married Dean Brown. They made Kansas home for only a short while, before moving to Dean's old homestead in Coweta, Okla. where they would help out on the family farm.
A few years later, Dean and Rose moved to Claremore to establish their home. It was here in this community that they watched their children grow up and attend area schools. During this time, Rose was sure to tend to her family as a full-time homemaker, wife and mother. Admirers of rural living, the family settled in a country home that Rose has continued to live in for the past fifty years.
A generous, caring and loving lady, Rose found a place in the Claremore school system to encourage and nurture children. She enjoyed hugging "her kids" and wasn't too concerned with stepping on the toes of those who did not condone her behavior. She gave the best hugs — always filled with genuine warmth and love.
Known as everyone's Me Maw, that title was worn proudly by Rose. Even as a blending of the Brown and Kellehan families occurred, with the marriage of Rose and Wayne, after the passing of both of their spouses — Rose did not differentiate between mine and his, each child and grandchild became "ours".
Through the years, Rose was heavily involved in church.
She attended First Baptist, Claremore for a number of years and more recently was a member of North Park Trinity Baptist Church. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir and singing specials. She was also integral in Vacation Bible School through the Verdigris United Methodist Church, in earlier years, where she served as Superintendent.
Rose enjoyed traveling with her grandchildren to see her brother and sister. She also liked camping, crafting and crocheting. She was genuine and uplifting and at times brutally honest, but always generous and selfless.
Her warmth and embracing nature will be missed by many friends and her loving family. Those family members who survive are her husband of 20 years, Wayne Kellehan of Claremore; children: son, Rick Brown and wife Sherry of Claremore; son, Jeff Brown and wife, Charlene, of Rockport, Texas; son, Carl Kellehan and wife, Jan of Cleveland, OH; daughter, Carolyn Zuniga of Claremore and son, Charlie Kellehan and wife, Bonnie of Claremore; 13 grandchildren: Randy Woodward and wife, Sheryl, Dustin Brown, Dennis Brown and wife, Maggie, Amy Helm and husband, Jason, Ryan Knostman and wife Jamie, Megan Knostman, Jeremy Kellehan, Crystal Zuniga, Zacherey Zuniga, Bethany Johnson and husband, Ostin, Ben Kellehan, Breanna Kellehan and Brooke Kellehan. She is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren: Shayla and Mandy Woodward, Emma Brown, Grayson Newton, Sydney, Caleb and Molly Helm and Ryan Knostman and Braydon Knostman along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, husband of 46 years, Dean Brown and siblings: sister, Doris Stroud and brother, Marion Nelson.
