Albert Jefferson Hamlett, Jr. Obituary

Inola - Albert Jefferson Hamlett, Jr. passed away peacefully on May 16, 2024, at the age of 92, surrounded by his family and friends. Born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Al was the eldest of five children. He graduated from Chouteau High School in 1950 and served in the Oklahoma Army National Guard from 1947 to 1950.


Al earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Oklahoma A&M (OSU) in 1955, where he met his wife, Barbara Jean Butler. They married on December 29, 1956, in Inola, Oklahoma.


After graduation, Al completed his military service as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, where he served as a navigator in the Aleutian Islands. He then worked for International Paper in Mobile, uAlabama. Al and Barbara moved to

Tulsa, Oklahoma where he worked for Owen, Mansur, and Steele Engineering. Al joined the Tulsa Water and Sewer Department in 1961 where he planned and executed the construction of various public works facilities, redesigning, upgrading, and renovating the original Mohawk Water Treatment Plant while preserving its original architectural beauty. He eventually retired as Deputy Director of Engineering Services of the City of Tulsa Public Works Department after a 41-year

career.


As a nationally respected leader in his profession, Al served in numerous roles and received awards for his leadership in the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the American Water Works Association. He was also a member of the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers and the OSU Alumni Association.


Al was a longtime member of Will Rogers United Methodist Church and Inola United Methodist Church where he held various offices. He also served as Assistant Scoutmaster in Boy Scout Troop 129.


Al and Barbara enjoyed traveling the world and, upon retirement, built a home in Inola, Oklahoma, where Al planted many trees and tended their land.


Al is survived by Barbara, his beloved wife of 67 years; daughter Margaret (Greg); son Jeff (Jenny); grandchildren Jaimen, Jordon (Eve), Jennifer (François), Bill, Brady (Parker), Juliana (Lindsey), Alaina (Jack), and Janine; and great-grandchildren Hart, June-Elise, Barrett, and Naomi. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all whose lives he touched.


Visitation will be held at Inola United Methodist Church, Friday May 24 from 4-7pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday May 25 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Inola United Methodist Church, Perfect Fit Home Care, Skiatook, OK, or ViaLife Hospice, Pryor, OK.
