Charles G. Hermon (Charlie) Obituary

Charles (Charlie) Hermon was born to Oscar and Lillie Hermon on December 29th, 1928, in Bazine, Kansas and died in his sleep at Clarehouse, a hospice house, on April 9th, 2025, in Tulsa, Oklahoma after choosing to stop dialysis at the age of 96.

Charlie grew up the youngest son of a rural mail carrier. It was in this home that he developed his easy-going demeanor and quiet Christian faith. He is preceded in death by 2 brothers and 4 sisters. He always said his favorite vacations were the weeklong Hermon reunions attended by his living siblings which occurred every year for more than twenty years.

Charlie began dating the love of his life, Bessie Hermon, when they were both 15. He even quit the football and basketball teams to be part of the cheerleading squad and be close to Bessie. Charlie went to one year of college before leaving to marry Bessie when she graduated from high school. This began 75 years of a wonderfully happy marriage where Charlie focused on providing for their family, making his wife happy, laughing, and enjoying life.

Charlie farmed on family land in Ness County, KS for a few years before beginning a 28-year career driving for Greyhound Bus Lines. He retired in 1986 when he was 57 and enjoyed a nearly 40-year retirement. After retirement, they traveled the United States and spent their Augusts for more than 25 years in Copper Mountain, Colorado, hiking well into their eighties.

Charlie and Bess always danced. Between local dances at their high school, Western swing dancing, advanced square dancing into their 70s, and dancing around the house, they danced and had fun throughout their entire lives. Charlie loved to laugh and make jokes. His humility and self-deprecating humor often hid the fact that he was the smartest person in the room, which was exactly his plan. Charlie requested that there be no service. He said a few days before he died that he didn't want people crying over him. He wanted everyone to remember the good times—of which there were so many—and all the fun that was had. He will be sorely missed, but we feel confident he is dancing around heaven with Bessie.

Charlie is survived by four daughters Lana (Charlie) Burns, Cindy (Steve) Bacon, Roxanne Green, and Gina (Randy) Bacus, 8 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
