Claude Johnson
A graveside service celebrating and remembering the life of Claude Jeanne "Nanny" Johnson will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-7, today, at DeLozier Funeral Service in Chelsea.
Claude Jeanne "Nanny" Johnson, born December 11, 1926, passed on November 15, 2019 just as she lived - writing her own story.
She was a daughter, sister, wife, immigrant, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, colleague and an independent soul. She was a spitfire - sassy, funny and irreverent. She never ceased teaching those she touched about the beauty in the details and the depth and intricacy of the human spirit.
Born in Morocco to French parents, she spent her youth chasing her siblings through the streets of Marrakesh and following her father into the desert toward adventure. At the age of 18, a handsome American soldier strutted into her life looking more like Humphrey Bogart than "Bogie" himself. It was her Casablanca story, but her "Bogie" didn't see her off at an air strip. Instead, they married, and she was bound for America on a boat full of war brides.
Striking her own course at the dawn of the post-war generation with only a dream and a man she loved by her side, she built her own identity. They made their life together in Claremore, Oklahoma - Zeb, a Vocational Agricultural Instructor at Claremore High School, and Claude, a clerk for the Health Department. Her greatest love, her "Bogie", passed entirely too young leaving her a widow in 1976, but it didn't stop her from living a determined life teaching her loved ones about culture, art, politics and language.
She taught us the value of balance between pride in independence and joy in community, to create our own stories, but to never set aside roots in favor of simply "fitting in". She taught us that the lives we lead have a meaningful effect on those we touch and that they will reverberate across generations. She never sacrificed her values or her culture, but rather adopted new passions with every experience.
She is survived by her son, Patrick Johnson, her daughter Emilie "Mimi" Shelton, her son-in-law Joel Shelton, her granddaughters Julie Shelton-Anderson and Hillary Shelton, her great-granddaughter Quinn Anderson and a depth of family and friends that she held dear in every expression. She is welcomed into the fold by her adoring husband, Zeb Johnson, her siblings Michel Mugnier and Marie-Jeanne Delafosse, her parents Émile and Léonie Mugnier and countless loved ones gone before. She will be deeply missed.
