Donald Lee 'Don" Thomas Obituary
A graveside memorial service to celebrate and remember the life of Donald Lee "Don" Thomas will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Wofford Cemetery in Catoosa. Don passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at the Clarehouse in Tulsa. He was 88.
Born in Joplin, MO on December 13, 1934, Don was raised by his adoptive parents C. David and Dorothy Ruth (Hestwood) Thomas. He was raised and educated in Tulsa and graduated from Will Rogers High School. On July 3, 1953 wearing one of his grandfather's suits, Don married the love of his life, Norma M. Cannon, at Sheridan Avenue Methodist Church. His uncle, Bill Hestwood, preformed the ceremony and Don's mother hosted the reception at her home. Their union was gifted with three children, Michael, Robert, and Sharon. Don provided for his family working for Allied Printers and Publishers from 1958 till 1973. He received the highly coveted Master Printers of America Award in May of 1970. In May of 1973, Don changed careers and became the manager of Rural Water Dist. #5 in Rogers County. It was a career that lasted for 27 years until his retirement.
A man that devoted his whole life to being a husband and father, Don loved his family and the times they were all together. He instilled in his children the same strong work ethic that he had. He also taught them the value of your word. Don led his home by example in all that he did. He was known for his humor and quick wit. According to his family, Don was a history buff. He enjoyed sports and was actively involved in all his children's school activities. In later life, Don looked forward to meeting what he called his, "coffee buddies," for a time of conversation and laughs. He could build most anything and enjoyed every minute of the challenge. Perhaps the hobby that brought him the most enjoyment was that of restoring old classic cars. Don was known for his attention to detail and made sure it was done correctly.
This husband, father, grandfather, and friend will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Don is survived by his wife of 70 years, Norma, children, Michael Lee Thomas and wife, Joyce of Brooklyn, NY, Robert Thomas of Grove, OK, and Sharon LeHew and husband, Jan of Coweta, OK, 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and brother, Rev. David Thomas, and wife, Claudia of Tulsa, OK. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Carol Hunter and brothers, Dan Thomas, and Mike Wilson.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at the Clarehouse for their care not only for Don but for them as his family.
