Joseph Duane Nelson Obituary

Claremore - Joseph Duane Nelson, known affectionately as Duane by his loved ones, passed away on December 23, 2024, just two days shy of his 76th birthday. Born on Christmas Day in 1948, Duane's life was a reflection of the joy and giving spirit that the holiday represents. He was a symbol of light and hope to all who knew him, embodying the virtues of kindness and faith throughout his lifetime.

Brother Duane was preceded in death by his parents, C.A. and Edna Nelson, and his beloved wife, Denise Nelson and is now reunited with them in eternal peace. He is survived by his devoted children, Joseph Nelson Jr. and Mindy Gerving, and his cherished granddaughters, Rachel and Rebecca Gerving. His sister, Shirley Wilhoite, along with a community of friends and relatives, will fondly remember Duane's gentle presence and selfless nature.

In 1968, Duane married the love of his life, Denise, and together they raised two beautiful children. Their marriage was a testament to love and partnership, enduring until Denise's passing in 2014. His children recall with fondness the special Saturday mornings spent with their father, who always had exciting plans for them. These moments created a tapestry of memories that will be treasured forever.

Proud of his academic achievements, Brother Duane obtained a theology degree from the Apostolic Bible Institute (ABI), which laid the foundation for a life dedicated to service and ministry. His professional journey was marked by his innovative work as a computer programmer, where he developed software and crafted programs that blessed local businesses and beyond. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to own and operate the Claremore Beauty College alongside his wife, Denise, for over 45 years, contributing greatly to the education and success of many in the beauty industry.

Brother Duane's commitment to his community was evident through his founding of the Westwood youth group, "Kid's Club," a program that provided children with warm meals, engaging activities, loads of laughter, and spiritual guidance. His love for music and ministry intertwined as he played the saxophone at local events, such as Claremore's "Dicken's on the Boulevard", and traveled to various churches to share his musical gifts and the wonderful word of God.

As the Pastor of Westwood Church, Brother Duane was instrumental in relocating the church to its current site in 2009. His vision for the congregation was always at the forefront of his mind, and he worked tirelessly to see it realized. His leadership was not only administrative but deeply personal, as he sought to uplift and support every individual he encountered.

Brother Duane's life was a living sermon of care, compassion, and positivity. He was steadfast and faithful, always seeing the best in everyone. To many, he was their biggest advocate, a source of unwavering support and encouragement. His love for children was boundless, and he dedicated himself to providing for them in every way possible.

Those who knew Brother Duane would describe him as gentle, selfless, and faith-filled. His legacy is one of love, service, and the indelible impact he made on the lives of those around him. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the power of positivity and the importance of community.

In his passing, we are reminded of the words of Matthew 25:21, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." Brother Duane lived a life worthy of this divine commendation, touching countless souls with his gentle, selfless, and faith-filled presence.
